Dusky Birch Sawfly (Craesus latitarsus) (Norton 1862)

Synonyms: Nematus latitarsis

Craesus latitarsus occurs in eastern North America. Adults ca. 10-11 mm in length, with long black antennae, shiny blue-black thorax and abdomen, and black and white legs. The larva is 20-25 mm long; yellow-green with a black head and rows of black lateral spots. The larvae feed on leaves of various species of birch (Betula), including Gray Birch (B. populifolia), Paper Birch (B. papyrifera), and Yellow Birch (B. alleghaniensis). When disturbed, they bend their bodies upward in a "S" shape. We only have images of the larvae.
